Welcome to CapCoastBUG

CapCoastBUG (Capricorn Coast Bicycle Users Group) is a social and advocacy group formed to promote safe and enjoyable cycling on the Capricorn Coast, Queensland. The group facilitates the discussion of all aspects of social cycling with a focus on the creation of a safe and enjoyable cycling environment via a constructive dialogue with the community.

Our rides are at a leisurely pace and distances are between 10 and 75km. Every Saturday at 7:00a.m there is a social ride from Rotary Park and children are encouraged to attend. Every Sunday there is a planned easy ride and a planned advanced ride. Riders are encouraged to cycle at their own pace and to meet back in a central location, usually Beaman Park in Yeppoon, for refreshments, discussions about the ride, and other cycling matters.

We will continue our Tuesday night rides as they seem to be very popular. We meet at Beaman Park at 6:00pm and usually do the Capricorn Coast Resort Ride (approximately 20km). A well-deserved coffee is usually had at Beachside 66 before completing the ride.

Please see our calendar of for social rides.

Well worth the Effort.

A weekend with CapCoast BUG’s Gold ’n’ Beach ride from Mt Morgan to Yeppoon.

Do you sometimes question the sense of what you are doing?  And wonder if it’s worth all the effort?  Such was the case late one Friday night in May after a long week of work, as we loaded up the car with bikes, tents, camping gear and kids in order to head off early the next morning for a 2 day ride with a small group of other Cap Coast Bug members.

Wouldn’t it be much easier to just sleep in on Saturday morning and laze around for the weekend??

And so it was with some reservations that we set off a 6am, headed for Mt Morgan where we met up with a approx 15 other riders. An eclectic group of cyclists ranging in age from 19 – 72 years young. A small but determined group supported by family and friends who made up the usual entourage of SAG wagon, catering partners and kids.

This was the Cap Coast BUG’s 2nd annual weekend sojourn on the Gold ‘n’ Beach ride.  The ride runs from Mt Morgan to Yeppoon via the Caves a distance of 140km over two days and what a fantastic weekend it turned out to be.

Starting out in Mt Morgan at the old Railway Station on a cool perfect May morning we headed for the Caves a small community north of Rockhampton some 85km away.  First up was a dream descent down the razor back, and onto the catholic school in Gracemere where our trusty food trailer had set up morning tea.  Then it was back on the bike along quiet country roads, stopping once to cross the highway and wait for a looong coal train.

We travelled into Rocky via the old highway across the Tropic of Capricorn and enjoyed a relaxing lunch by the river in Rockhampton.

After lunch we set off again - over the railway bridge and out via Glenlee toward the Caves.  Again, back roads where the order of the day for most of the way.  We had put out the call and received good old fashion country hospitality along the way – stopping for afternoon tea at our local members property who supplied the space and toilet facilities for our tiring riders.

However the lure of the Caves Pub was strong enough to pull all riders the last 7km along the highway, where everyone congregated for a cold ale and said g’day to the locals who thought we were mad of course! And some of whom I’m sure had been in the very same spot the year before!

Overnight was spent at the Caves Showgrounds where the hot showers where to die for, despite having to share the showers with a few of the friendly green locals.

Great dinner at the pub with random prize draws donated by BQ and some of the local bike shops.

Hearty cooked Breakfast for all, served up by the tucker team (rustled up by the support crew) to get us started and and then it was off on a 60 km ride to Yeppoon via the small community of Cawarral. Again taking a leisurely route on back roads to avoid the highway traffic as much as possible.

We finished up in Yeppoon with a Sunday lunch BBQ in the park by the beach, and somehow ended up with a lot more people than just the original 15 riders who started out.

We enjoyed lunch with family and friends celebrating the achievement of completing the 140km ride.

The charm of the weekend:  A small intimate group of likeminded friends out for a weekend of exercise and fun. An unlikely bunch of varying ages (ranging from 19 – 71 yrs young) and interests – but all who share the one common love of riding a bike.  Cycling seems to break down barriers and allow conversation to flow easily.

It was a relaxing and enjoyable weekend wrapped up with food, company, exercise and a sense of achievement.  Made possible because it was supported and catered for by family and friends, and cheap thanks to the support of BQ.

We came home from the weekend tired but feeling surprisingly upbeat and thrilled after such a fun and successful weekend – definitely worth the effort!

Great company and thanks to BQ whose support made it all possible.

The  Rockhampton to Yeppoon Rail Trail EPetition which was posted on the Queensland Government's website on the 17/08/09 and which ran until the 11/09/09 has amassed 1122 signatures!!  This is an excellent effort from all of those involved.

During the course of the EPetition the Capricorn Coast BUG had radio interviews   (ABC,4RO & Radio Nag), a stall at the Yeppoon & Figtree  markets and a display at the Yeppoon Library with posters, flyers & many many emails. All of this has generated much positive support with locals &  visitors (some international) who were eager to tell us of their rides on Trails in their own areas and that they could hardly wait to ride on ours!!

We were also contacted by Dr. Debbie Ibbotson who is passionate about cycling but after a nasty accident on her bike in Yeppoon has vowed never to ride on the road again. So she was very keen to add both her voice on ABC Radio & Radio Nag & her support to our endeavour.

We now have to wait for the EPetition to be tabled in Parliament and for the Rockhampton Regional Council to show initiative with the project and organise for the signing and transfer of the relevant lease agreements.

We have had offers of support and help from Arleen Keene the Recreation & Rail Trail Development Officer from Bicycle Victoria and from Damian McCrohan from Rail Trails Australia and many many community members

Meanwhile we will keep you posted with a monthly newsletter about Rail Trail Happenings.

AND the BIG NEWS on the Local Scene is that the ROUTE for the Annual Bicycle Queensland 9 day fully catered Ride for next year  is.....

                ..   YEPPOON  to BUNDABERG!!!!

a wonderful opportunity to showcase our area & FOR US ALL TO JOIN IN!!!  so get on your bike & get those legs pumping!!!
