Welcome to CapCoastBUG

CapCoastBUG (Capricorn Coast Bicycle Users Group) is a social and advocacy group formed to promote safe and enjoyable cycling on the Capricorn Coast, Queensland. The group facilitates the discussion of all aspects of social cycling with a focus on the creation of a safe and enjoyable cycling environment via a constructive dialogue with the community.

Our rides are at a leisurely pace and distances are between 10 and 75km. Every Saturday at 7:30am there is a social ride from the car park opposite Coffee Club, and children are encouraged to attend. Every Sunday there is a planned easy ride and a planned advanced ride. Riders are encouraged to cycle at their own pace and to meet back in a central location, usually Beaman Park in Yeppoon, for refreshments, discussions about the ride, and other cycling matters.

We will continue our Tuesday night rides as they seem to be very popular. We meet at Beachside 66
at 6:30pm and usually do the Capricorn Coast Resort Ride (approximately 20km). A well-deserved coffee is usually had at Beachside 66 before completing the ride.

Please see our calendar of events for social rides.

Bike Week (2010) – What a Blast

From a teddy bears’ picnic on the Yeppoon beachfront to roaring down the Razorback at Mount Morgan, Bike Week on the Capricorn Coast was a huge success.

· The week started with a popular Teddy Bears picnic ride, when 17 children and their parents (roughly 35 cyclists) explored the bike path from the Yeppoon beachfront to the Lammermoor Native Gardens and back again (7.5km).

A brekky on the beach was a chance for newcomers to learn about BUG group activities.

· The regular Tuesday night ride to Capricorn International, attended by about 10, was used by some as a training ride for the weekend’s Gold’n’Beach ride from Mount Morgan to Yeppoon, with some riders doing multiple laps of the 20km route.

· Forty-five people learnt about basic bike maintenance from Rod of 7Cycles on Wednesday night, and gained some handy tips about riding and nutrition from master athlete and cycling expert , CQUniversity’s Associate Professor Peter Reaburn.

Peter’s advice about cadence and spinning was a revelation to some beginner cyclists, who put the advice to good use on the Gold’n Beach ride.

· Yeppoon High School teachers and students joined in the spirit of the week with two teachers riding every day, eight cycling some days, and plenty of students on wheels as well.

· The BQ in CQ information night on Thursday night saw information about September’s BQ Yeppoon to Bundaberg ride being shared with about 25 people, with  a few new participants firing plenty of questions at Rebecca.

· THE grand finale of Bike Week on the Capricorn Coast, the annual Gold n Beach social bike ride from Mount Morgan to Yeppoon, was more popular than ever.

·The events wouldn’t have been possible without the support of BQ, whose financial assistance and great prize giveaways are much appreciated.

Gold’n Beach ride report

From a handful of riders the first year, to two handfuls the second, a 60-strong group gathered at Mount Morgan on Saturday morning itching to tear down the Razorback Road before meandering to Rockhampton for lunch.

A number of riders joined in along the way, including 86-year-old Bill Thaw, who relived his youthful days of road competition as he rode from Rockhampton to The Caves, and then to Yeppoon the next day.

Not even two flat tyres in a short space of time could stop Bill from finishing the ride, as he pushed his 40-year-old bike the last kilometre-and-a-half.

Eighteen riders arrived from the Fraser Coast to explore our backyard, which included riding past the Woolwash and the old Tropic of Capricorn Spire, through Glenlee to  The Caves, and the lovely ride through Cawarral to the Emu Park Road and the scenic route along the coast to Yeppoon.

Two intrepid Year 10 high school students, Nathan Death and Jarod Johns, also took on the challenge of the ride.

Principal Ian Boon joined the bike convoy and escorted the boys from The Caves to Greenlakes Road, while teachers Lisa Whitworth, Jill Stevens and Linda McCluskey rode as well.

Jaime Ince, 10, rode 50ks over the two days. Brittany Dunn, 11, and her sister Riley, 13 (also of Yeppoon high), took on the mountain bike section on Sunday and rode 30 and 55 km respectively.

Kelly, 10, and Tansey, 12, took turns on the back of the tandem with their parents Rachael and Tim.

Two recumbent riders, Rhodes Watson and Tony Arnold, added to the flavour of the event.

A welcome barbecue finished off the event at Appleton Park in Yeppoon on Sunday.
